The main strategic obstacle in this battle was a
small river that needed to be crossed. The British
cavalry crossed the river first with the infantry
behind, moving much slower. Colonel Picton
noticed, upon crossing the river, that the French
were attempting to move some howitzers on top of a
small hill nearby. Sensing an opportunity, Picton
charged. The enemy was crushed, but seeing
reinforcements approaching Picton retreated back
to the river.
